Hi, I’m Rei — born in Japan, raised in Japan, and still living here.
Real Talk Japanese exists because of a gap I kept noticing: the Japanese in textbooks and the Japanese we actually speak are two different languages. Textbooks teach you 「そうですね」; they don’t teach you when a Japanese person says it just to fill silence. They teach you that -kun is “for boys”; they don’t tell you why your female coworker gets called -kun by the boss.
